Galway and the Great War
A telling of personal stories
‘Galway and the Great War’ exhibition opened at Galway City Museum in 2014. A concertina structure on two long walls features a number of large portraits and individual stories of people from Galway whose lives were affected by World War I. A deeply personal exhibition, it tells the stories of individuals who served at the front and those who were left behind.
Designed by John Raftery, the overall graphic approach results in a respectful mood, with the sparse use of bright accent colours throughout. The large portraits are emotive and powerful and allow the audience to connect strongly to the heart of the stories. The interactive touchscreen features letters, posters and artefacts, inviting visitors to delve deeper into the lives and motivations of these Galway war heroes.
